Invasive Species Surface Mapping

When: Mid-July - Late August

Where: Lake wide

Working in partnership with Quinte Conservation, trained volunteers from the Moira Lake Property Owners Association (MLPOA) will conduct lake-wide surface mapping of aquatic vegetation during the summer growing season. The focus is to document the presence and distribution of invasive species—particularly Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM)—within Moira Lake.

Volunteers will survey areas of the lake from small boats or accessible shorelines, recording observations where invasive plants are visible near the surface. Each observation will include GPS location, photographs, and brief notes on plant density.

Field data will be collected using Survey123, a mobile data-collection system connected to Quinte Conservation’s GIS mapping platform.

Observations submitted by volunteers are compiled and used to produce geo-referenced maps showing the distribution of aquatic vegetation across the lake.

This work will help establish the first consistent baseline map of invasive aquatic vegetation in Moira Lake, providing valuable information to support long-term monitoring and responsible lake stewardship.
