Drone Mapping Project

When: Mid to Late August
Where: Lake wide

MLPOA is exploring the use of drone technology to complement the volunteer surface mapping program. This is a proposed project. When funding is approved we will inform membership.

Working with qualified operators and technical partners, aerial surveys will be conducted during peak growing season to capture high-resolution imagery of aquatic vegetation across selected areas of Moira Lake.

Drone flights allow large sections of the lake to be photographed quickly and consistently from above. These images can reveal vegetation patterns that may not be visible from boats or shorelines, helping to identify areas of dense plant growth and potential concentrations of invasive species such as Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM).

Captured imagery will be processed and reviewed using geographic information system (GIS) tools. The aerial data can then be compared with observations collected by volunteers during surface mapping, providing an additional layer of information to help confirm plant locations and improve the overall accuracy of lake vegetation maps.

Volunteers from the MLPOA will provide 'ground-truthing' (on the water validation) of drone imagery by conducting Survey123 observations at specified locations on the lake.

Together, the surface and drone mapping initiatives will provide a clearer picture of aquatic vegetation in Moira Lake and help establish a reliable baseline for future monitoring and stewardship efforts.
