Good Neighbour Code

Good neighbor at the lake

Welcome to Moira Lake, where time at the lake means endless fun and cherished family moments! To ensure everyone enjoys their time here, the MLPOA has created a Good Neighbour Code, promoting respectful considerate behaviour. While most of us naturally follow these common-sense guidelines, it's essential to share them with guests and renters so they can fully embrace our beloved Moira Lake etiquette. Let’s work together to make lake time unforgettable for everyone!

Conscientious Lighting

Be Light conscious.

  • Light only what and when you need.

  • Use energy efficient, warm white bulbs that can be turned off.

  • Avoid solar lights.

  • Direct lights down.

  • Protect wildlife ecosystems.

Being Wake Wise

How You can be Wake Wise

  1. Be aware of the size of your wake during displacement, transition & planing speeds.

  2. Position your passengers through-out the boat in order to reduce the time spent in transition speed.

  3. Look behind you to see & understand the impact of your wake on shorelines, docks or other structures. Adjust your speed & direction to minimize the impact.

  4. Respect the shoreline zone. Reduce your speed to less than 10 km/h within 30 metres of any shore including the narrow channels between islands.

  5. Water-ski, tube, & wake-board well away from all shorelines. Try to make use of the entire length of the lake.

  6. Consider the size of the wake produced when purchasing a new boat.

Healthy Waterfronts

For generations, families have been lured to Ontario’s picturesque lakes and rivers to swim, boat and fish. At the lake, people discover the enchanting call of the loon, the sight of turtles basking on logs and magnificent osprey soaring above crisp blue waters.

The popularity of retreating to Ontario’s lakes for rest and recreation continues to grow. As a result, development on the shorelines of our lakes continues.

In addition to this, more and more people are extending their time at the cottage to live there year-round. To preserve the lake environment that brought us here in the first place, it is imperative for us to understand our impacts and to know how to reduce them.

This guide offers you information and advice on ways to make the most of your shoreline property while living in balance with your lake’s fragile ecosystem.
